Field Parameters

Do you want to change the fields in your table visual or matrix visual by slicer selection? Did you know you can use the option field parameters for this. Field parameters gives you the option to choose your fields by slicer selection.

Assume that your data model would look something like this. You have a table with data and 4 dimension tables that filter that data:

You have a nice report with a table or matrix and you want the give the end-user the option to choose his dimension (fields) tables by slicer selection.

At the ribbon Optimize – Fields , we can create a field parameter. Here we can choose the dimensions (fields) that we would like in our slicer selection and our table or matrix visual. We can change the names of the fields to make them more easy to understand and we can give our parameter a name for recognition purposes.

By a click on create, Power BI will then create a calculated column for you that you can use in your table of matrix on the row section.

The end result would look like this (with basic visualization)

You can combine this returned number with a switch function to influence your total levels.
